4.0 out of 5 starsA REALLY GOOD BOOK
By Shani Brown on June 2, 2005

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I HAPPENED TO READ THE SHORT STORY OF HOW BRANWYN WAS BORN AND WAS REALLY INTRIGUED WITH THE STORY. AT TIMES, THE STORY WAS A LITTLE CONFUSING (THAT'S JUST ME, NOT THE STORY) BUT IN THE END, IT WAS WONDERFUL. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF MEDIEVAL SCOTTISH ROMANCE, THIS IS A GREAT ONE TO PICK UP.

I don't normally read romance, but I like historical fiction and decided to give this book a try. It got my attention from the beginning and it jumps right into the story. Tension builds quickly between the heroine and her lover. It is clearly written, easy to read and enjoyable throughout. Romance fans will have plenty of brawn mixed with tenderness to feast on.

There is a nice touch of mysticism. The heroine is a healer who reads runes and has "the sight". Your heart goes out to several of the characters and their troubles. There is a fun plot twist near the end, though not hard to guess if paying attention.

If I were to discount anything it would be too much romance without enough history in the first several chapters. The author does delve deeper into history later in the book. This is the only book I have read from this author, so I'm not sure what has been told previously. The sexual content is tasteful and the language didn't make my ears bleed which is greatly appreciated.

I wish I didn't have to return! I love a good Medieval Historical. The hero is just YUM! I knew, just knew what the twist would be for the heroine. But it sure did knock the hero on his butt! Characters were good, it felt like I was immersed in Medieval Scotland without the smells and dirt!

A great read. If you like Medieval romances grab this one!

This is an amazing book, a classic historical romance. Alpha-male hero, heroine with the sight. Great secondary characters. If you enjoy medieval romances with characters that live in the "real world" you'll love this book. Seriously great . . .

As a long time fan of the medieval romance, I have a tendency to be discriminating. I require more, as a reader, out of this subgenre than any other. In which case, I am thrilled to report that I have found a new favorite. Allie Bates has created a winning combination of historical detail and a satisfactory plot line. Hearty and illustrative, the story will take the reader through an entire range of emotion. Earthchild is, without a doubt, a keeper. I will be looking for more from the talented Allie Bates.

Wonderful medieval romance filled with unexpected plot twists. The background history is exactly that - background...a sense of being in the medieval age without getting lost in historical details and period language. The sexual chemistry between the hero and heroine is electrifying. The love scenes burn with passion. But it's the romance that is the best thing about Earthchild. The evolution of emotion that the hero and heroine experience is beautifully written. There are moments in the story that made me sigh out loud! A keeper!

This is a story about a brawny Scotsman, a preternatural maiden and how their lives are forever changed by a fated meeting. The reader is drawn into the well developed plot, which will keep one spellbound by all the realistic men and women and their daily conflicts. I felt as though I was living in the medieval times during the 15th century, experiencing all that the characters endured, as the portrayal of the period is so descriptive. In EARTHCHILD, Allie Bates has written a story that will not soon be forgotten."

From the first paragraph the reader is sent back in time to 15th century Scotland. The dialogue, though sometimes indecipherable, is authentic and makes the story even richer. As this is a prequel to another story, it is not very long. However, it is packed with so much love and heartache that it still leaves the reader feeling satisfied.

What Readers are saying about The Abyss

    From Fallen Angel Reviews

    • FAR

With its cast of heavy hitters and rising stars The Abyss is the best anthology that I've read in quite a while. There is more than one story contained in these pages that may be offensive to some readers. While I may not agree with how some of the characters acted and reacted, I have to say that I was enthralled . . . Dark Romance has compiled a thought-provoking peek into a world of romance that is not considered the norm.

Abyss Authors include Brenna Lyons, Steve Lazarowitz (who also writes as Master Nage), Charlotte Boyett-Compo (author of the Wind Legends Series), CT Adams (co-author of the upcoming Hunter's Moon) and amazing new voices like Terri Pray and Allie Bates. We guarantee that this book will tell you stories you've never heard before and will introduce you to characters you will remember for a life time.
